Welcome to our class webpage
On this webpage you will find current skills we are working on, skills we are reviewing, and other notes. Please check this webpage at the beginning of every week to see what social skills your child is working on in our class. Although this webpage focuses on our social skill curriculum, please know that we regularly work on math and reading skills that correlate with Ms. Vatral's instruction. If you have any questions regarding this webpage, things we are working on, or how your child is doing, please feel free to email me at cdibble@mcsdga.net or call the school at 706-748-3072. As always, thank you for support!
Notes for the Week:
I'm sorry I have forgotten to update my webpage. Last week we worked on trying something new. You can review the language for this social skill with your child, by looking at the list on the bottom of the page. This week we will be discussing dealing with teasing. Please review our language for this skill below. Role-playing the right way and wrong way of using this skill will help your child appropriately deal with bullying. As always, thank you for your help and have a great week!
What are we working hard on this week?
Dealing with Teasing
- Ask if the person is teasing you.
- "Are you teasing me?"
- If they say "yes" tell the person to "STOP" in a strong voice.
- If they keep teasing, tell them you do not care what they say.
- If they keep teasing, walk away and ignore them.
- If they keep teasing, tell the teacher.
What social skills are we reviewing?
(listed from oldest to most recent skills covered)
(Making Eye Contact) We look with our eyes because...
- it shows people we are listening
- it helps us learn
- that's what good eye contact is
(Handling difficult situations appropriately) When things don't go right I can...
- try another way
- be nice
- take turns by sharing
- ask a friend or a teacher
- talk about it
- keep my cool by
- counting to 10
- taking 3 deep breaths
- tell someone how I feel
- think about something happy
(Making Friends) I can make friends by...
- sharing and taking turns
- playing sports and games
- asking someone to play
- making something for someone
- smiling
- greeting someone
(Greeting People) When I greet people I...
- say "hello", "good afternoon", "good evening", "good morning", "good bye", or "see you later."
- make eye contact
- smile
- wave my hand
When having a conversation with someone, we have jobs we need to do to show someone we are listening when they are talking to us. Please use the language below to help your child be a listener in a conversation and have a conversation with someone.
- When people talk to me I...
- make eye contact
- stay still and be quiet
- wait for a pause before I talk
- ask a question about what the person is saying
- This shows I am listening!
- When people talk to me I...
I start and keep a conversation going by...
- greeting the person first
- asking a question about what the person is doing
- asking more questions about what they say
- who?
- what?
- where?
- why?
- how?
- when?
I end a conversation by...
- choosing to end the conversation
- waiting until I have asked a question
- saying:
- "It was nice talking to you, but I have to go. See you later!"
- "I will talk to you later."
I introduce myself to people I don't know by...
- waiting for a pause
- walking up to the person and making eye contact
- staying 1 arm's length away
- saying, "My name is____." Then saying, "What is your name?"
- saying, "It's nice to meet you" and shake hands.
**This helps me meet new people!
I know when to stop talking by...
- seeing if the person looks bored
- asking the person, "Do you want to hear more?"
- If the person says, "No." I can ask, "Do you want to talk?" or "What do you want to talk about?"
**This makes people want to talk with me.
I ask someone to play by...
- finding something to play with
- walking up to someone I want to play with
- getting the other person to look at me
- asking, "Do you want to play?"
**I should try this with a lot of different people to make a lot of friends!
I join someone in play by...
- deciding if I want to play with them
- walking up to the person and waiting for a pause in their play
- asking, "Can I play too?"
- If they say, "No," I can ask someone else to play
I share with people by...
- letting them use something I have
- saying, "yes," when a friends asks to share
We share because...
- it helps make friends
- it is nice
- it makes people happy
I compromise with someone by...
- asking the other person what they want to do
- say, "What do you want to play?"
- wait and listen
- telling the other person what I want to do
- doing some of what the other person wants to do AND then doing some of what I want to do
I play with someone by...
- asking how to play the game by saying, "How do you play this game?"
- deciding who will go first
- Roll a dice. Who ever gets the highest number goes first.
- or let the other person go first. You can say, "You can go first."
- taking turns and not cheating
I show I understand people's feelings by...
- looking for signs that other people are sad, angry, or need help
- asking, "Are you OK?" Then ask, "What happened?"
- Say, "Can I help?"
- If they say, "Yes," then do something to help.
I need to accept "No" for an answer.
- Sometimes parents or teachers say "No" when you ask for something.
- Accept "No" by saying "Okay" and do not get mad.
- If you do not get mad and accept "No" for an answer, the other person will feel good about you.
Trying Something New
- If you are afraid to try something new, talk about it with someone
- Tell yourself, "It's okay to be afraid the first few times. After I try it, I will feel better."
- Calm yourself down by doing something you know how to do.
- Watch others try it.
- Ask someone to tell you how to do it.
- Try it yourself.
